Reviving Nauluvatu: A Spiritual Journey in Suva

Spread the love

On November 26, 2023, a religious ceremony was held to honor the leaders of the Nauluvatu community. The event took place at the Kalivari Church in Samabula, Suva, and was attended by the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, who confirmed the leadership status of Sairusi Rakai within the Nauluvatu community.

When people hear the name Nauluvatu, several locations come to mind, including the village of Waidina in Naitasiri and another village in Nakelo. There are also those who associate the name with the Suva area, particularly near Reservoir Road, close to St. Giles Psychiatric Hospital.

Waisale Davuiqalita announced in a meeting at Naocovuaka on November 28, 2024, that Nauluvatu in Suva is set to host their community’s upcoming events. Davuiqalita shared significant information about their community.

He also referenced historical accounts penned by Colman Wall, a foreigner who documented events in the region during 1919. Wall detailed occurrences leading up to a significant event in 1843 about Suva’s village affairs. His other writings included a personal account of his time in Suva and a noteworthy return from Nadroga, naming figures such as Dakuwaqa, while his brother Banuve provided insights during his leadership period.

The purpose of referencing Wall’s writings emphasizes the preservation of the iTaukei people’s dialogue and history. For those residing in Suva, a book exists that provides a glimpse into their heritage, reflecting on dialogues that continue to resonate within the community. Alongside these records, some were authored during the colonial era, detailing the experiences of those placed in positions of service for the land.

Davuiqalita relayed stories regarding the elder community members who relocated to Vatuwaqa, a well-known area today. This relocation journey also involved members from Nauluvatu and others from Nacokaika.

Moreover, the contents of Wall’s writings connect with Davuiqalita’s insights, though it is important to note some discrepancies. Wall mentions geographical names tied to their kin, highlighting prior relationships stemming from Nacokaika before moving to Vatuwaqa or Kaunikuila, and the area of Baniwalai near Tamavua.

In the coming weeks, Davuiqalita will further discuss the leadership of the Nauluvatu community. Scheduled talks will take place in Naocovuaka and via a teleconference on the morning of Saturday, December 5, 2024, ensuring effective communication prior to the formal acceptance of Roko Tui Suva’s esteemed role.

It is noted that Roko Tui Suva has been in his position for 100 years, showcasing the longevity and consistency of leadership within local traditions.

Looking forward, the community is hopeful for upcoming developments, as they continue to honor their roots and acknowledge the guidance and narratives that have shaped their history, allowing for unity and growth within the Nauluvatu community.
