The Ministry of Youth and Sports has recently taken important steps to assist the vulnerable youth population in Suva, profiling 140 individuals living on the streets, which includes 40 women and eight children under the age of 10. Minister Jese Saukuru led a significant meeting with teams from Social and Child Protection to strategize on rehabilitation and diversion pathways for those identified during this initiative.

This effort not only aims to address the immediate needs of those affected but also sets the stage for a broader commitment to vulnerable youth across the nation with plans for a similar profiling initiative in the Western Division. A dedicated working group, comprising Permanent Secretaries from both ministries, will oversee the implementation of these vital initiatives.

Furthermore, organizations such as Inspire Pacific and Kauwai Home of the Salvation Army shared valuable insights from their recent rehabilitation program, which successfully supported 17 youths and their families. Their approach is considered a potential model for expanding rehabilitation efforts nationwide.

Community leaders play a crucial role in these discussions. Renowned musician Seru Serevi shared his outreach efforts using music as a therapeutic engagement tool for street dwellers, while former rugby star Seremaia Bai highlighted his impactful work with 500 children and youth through his rugby academy, offering insights for supporting these vulnerable individuals.

Both ministries expressed a strong commitment to collaborate with existing programs to enhance rehabilitation efforts and expand similar initiatives in other regions. This holistic and inclusive strategy aims to tackle the multifaceted challenges faced by at-risk youth and foster an environment of support and empowerment.
