Discover the Hidden Charms of Stirling Castle in Levuka

Reviving History: Discover Levuka’s Hidden Gem, Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle, an architectural treasure in Levuka Town, carries deep historical significance. Situated on Mission Hill with stunning views of the Levuka Passage, this luxury mansion was built in 1880 by the Schneider family, who were influential German settlers of that time.

Today, the castle operates as a delightful bed and breakfast known as The Lookout, under the care of Alice Tamani. Alice, originally from Brisbane, Australia, moved to Fiji after marrying her Fijian husband and has developed a profound affection for Levuka and its community. She reflects on her bonded connection to the town, saying, “Every time I came to Levuka, it got into my heart a little more,” highlighting the warm embrace she received from the locals.

When Alice arrived in November 2023, the property required care, yet it still boasted breathtaking views of the South Seas and the mist-laden Lovoni mountains. The previous owner, Scottish philanthropist Duncan Creighton, dedicated significant time to preserving the house’s history through his photography and love for the site. He believed in the importance of maintaining the property for future generations and generously handed it to the Levuka Historical Society for ongoing preservation efforts.

Stirling Castle has changed hands only a few times since its inception. After the Schneiders, John Sword, an engineer and shipwright, acquired it in 1915 and retained ownership until 1990. Alice is dedicated to honoring the legacies left by previous owners, striving to blend historical essence with modern comforts, such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi, to enhance visitors’ experiences.

Under Alice’s stewardship, The Lookout exemplifies Levuka’s colonial heritage. Guests can step back in time with its preserved gardens, antique furnishings, and an atmosphere that fosters connection away from modern distractions. Alice hopes that each visitor leaves feeling part of the local history and beauty.

As Levuka progresses toward potential recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the commitment shown by Alice in preserving its colonial past and fostering community spirit highlights the broader goal of safeguarding Fiji’s cultural narratives. The Lookout not only offers a unique blend of relaxation and history but also embodies a hopeful vision for appreciating and sustaining Fiji’s vibrant heritage.

This tranquil retreat invites travelers to rejuvenate their minds, bodies, and spirits while reconnecting with the rich culture and nature that Levuka has to offer.
