In the Solove Sector of Fiji, an inspiring story is emerging that showcases determination and creativity within the local sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly improved his life and the livelihoods of numerous sugarcane farmers by launching a tractor service that meets a vital need in the industry.
After leaving school in Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester before managing operations at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). He discovered a substantial opportunity in the sugarcane sector, particularly with a new initiative introduced by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti boldly entered the field as a transport service provider. “I noticed a shortage of tractors in the sector, which hindered farmers from preparing their land,” he said. “Many growers couldn’t afford to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I was able to offer services without needing immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone.”
Starting with a single tractor, Murti utilized his experience from Food Process to assist local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to providing reliable service rapidly gained the attention of farmers across the region.
Today, Murti’s business has expanded dramatically, operating a fleet of six tractors along with essential equipment like disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, which are crucial for sugarcane farming. “With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he stated. “The work order system allowed me to manage it like a proper business, benefiting the farmers as well.”
Additionally, Murti has resumed his own cane farming activities. This year, he cultivated 7.5 acres of sugarcane and has plans for further growth.
