A once-neglected sugarcane farm in Wainikoro, situated in Labasa, has undergone a significant transformation, reinvigorated through the efforts of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) in collaboration with local landowners and the iTaukei Land Trust Board. The revival project commenced in August of the previous year, marking the initial phase where 1.5 hectares were planted with cane seeds.
FSC’s Chief Executive Bhan Singh emphasized the crucial role of reclaiming idle agricultural land, stating that such initiatives not only contribute to economic growth but also bolster food security. He spotlighted this project as a prime example of how strategic partnerships, combined with advanced farming technology, can empower local farmers and enhance land utilization.
This revival mirrors the broader efforts by the Ministry of Sugar, which has recently implemented an assistance program benefitting 325 farmers through financial support for acquiring land and resources necessary for sugarcane cultivation. The Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, noted plans to extend support to an additional 38 farmers, indicating a focused approach on fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
Both initiatives highlight a pivotal moment for Fiji’s sugar industry, showcasing a commitment to modernize farming techniques and improve productivity. This includes introducing mechanization, as seen in the distribution of sugarcane planters and fertilizer applicators with government subsidies, aimed at addressing labor shortages and high production costs.
Through these collaborative programs, there is renewed hope for a sustainable future in Fiji’s sugar sector, encouraging a more competitive and resilient agricultural landscape that benefits both farmers and the local economy. The collective focus on revitalization and support continues to pave the way for a productive revival of sugarcane farming in the region.
