Reviving Education in Fiji: A Call to Action for Community Engagement

Reviving Fiji’s Educational Commitment: A Call to Action

The late Chief Justice, Sir Timoci Tuivaga, underscored a pressing issue concerning the involvement of Fijians (i-Taukei) in their children’s education during his address at the Fijian Teachers Association’s golden jubilee conference held at Natabua High School in Lautoka in January 1984. He described a concerning trend of growing idleness and lack of educational interest within the Fijian community.

As the acting Governor-General at that time, Justice Tuivaga pointed out that, compared to non-Fijians, the Fijian community often faces challenges in nurturing effective educational practices at home. He called on both teachers and parents to take a proactive role in motivating children to discover their potential and grow into responsible citizens. He placed a significant emphasis on the importance of instilling values of hard work and improving living standards among Fijian youth.

A key concern raised by Justice Tuivaga was the unsuitable study environments within many households, where cramped living conditions could obstruct children’s academic progress. He suggested that these challenges could be mitigated through better family planning and improved housing solutions.

These themes remain relevant today, echoing the recent comments made by Paula Manumanunitoga, the General Secretary of the Fijian Teachers Association. He highlighted the decline in literacy rates as being linked to diminished parental engagement, especially within i-Taukei families. This decline is further exacerbated by the discontent among educators stemming from difficult working conditions and insufficient salaries.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has shared similar concerns, noting that the increasing disconnection of students from their educational endeavors is contributing to broader societal issues, including rising crime rates and drug-related problems. He emphasized the importance of a cohesive approach involving parents, educators, and community members as crucial to enhancing Fiji’s educational framework.

As awareness increases regarding these significant challenges, there is optimism that coordinated efforts can lead to meaningful advancements in the educational environment. The potential for revitalizing the commitment to education in Fiji hinges on collaborative engagement among all stakeholders, ensuring that children not only achieve academically but also become active and constructive members of their communities.
