Reviving Fiji’s Beef: A New Era in Navosa Farming

Nine farmers in Navosa Province, Fiji, have received a breeding bull from Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu as part of a government initiative to rejuvenate beef farming. During a meeting at the Vatumali Government station earlier this year, Mr. Rayalu had pledged to provide the farmers with F1 Senepol breed bulls.

Addressing the farmers at Botona settlement in Keiyasi, Mr. Rayalu shared the government’s ambitious plans for the beef farming sector. He emphasized that Senepol cattle are well-suited to tropical climates and known for producing high-quality meat.

“This initiative aims to enhance the genetic quality of the local cattle population, leading to improved meat quality, greater disease resistance, and higher productivity, which are all essential for revitalizing the beef industry in Navosa Province,” he stated.

Mr. Rayalu reminded the farmers that Navosa was once renowned for beef farming, with many farmers engaged in raising cattle. He urged them to collaborate and strengthen their cluster farms to revive beef production in the region.

The minister assured the farmers that the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways is prepared to assist them in enhancing their farming practices. However, he stressed that each farmer must be proactive, showing commitment and dedication.

“The ministry acquired these breeds from Australia years ago and continues to conduct research and successful embryo transfers here in Fiji,” he added.

Currently, the Navosa Livestock Cooperative operates with three clusters. There are 196 registered beef farms in Navosa, comprised of 34 commercial farms, 36 semi-commercial farms, and 126 subsistence farms.
