The preservation of traditional Fijian art forms, such as masi printing, weaving, and carving, plays a vital role in maintaining the richness of Fijian culture. This importance is being highlighted through initiatives like the National Crafts Exhibition, highlighted by Maciusela Raitaula, the Cultural and Arts Manager for the Fiji Arts Council, in a recent interview with Fiji One News.
Raitaula emphasized that while women have historically dominated these crafts, men are increasingly joining the ranks, particularly in carving and pottery. The Fiji Arts Council is making a concerted effort to encourage men’s participation in this culturally significant exhibition, recognizing the need for all community members to contribute to the rich tapestry of Fijian craftsmanship.
One notable participant is 74-year-old Paula Liga from Fulaga, who has been carving since he was just 10 years old. Liga expressed the hope that this traditional art form will be passed on to future generations, reminding the I-Taukei community of the importance of nurturing these talents. He stated, “We have many good talents… if we can rekindle these practices and teach our children, they will understand that these talents are blessings given to us by God.”
The exhibition also features innovative efforts in upcycling, showcased by advocate Jane Naulu. She presented a unique way of repurposing beer cans into earrings, which not only serves as an artistic expression but also promotes sustainability by reducing waste. Naulu encourages local women and youth to engage in such activities, presenting an opportunity to earn income while contributing to environmental conservation.
The National Crafts Exhibition is running for two more days at the Saint Stephens Building in Suva, from 9 AM to 7 PM, highlighting the importance of both tradition and innovation in Fijian craftsmanship.
This event not only celebrates the rich heritage of Fijian culture but also fosters community involvement and environmental awareness, paving the way for a brighter future where traditional skills can thrive alongside modern practices.
