Reviving Families: The Key to Fighting HIV/AIDS in Fiji

The general secretary of the Fiji Council of Churches, the Rev. Simione Tugi, has underscored the vital role of families in the battle against HIV/AIDS. He has also encouraged the public to visit medical centers for testing.

Mr. Tugi pointed out that the stigma surrounding HIV is a significant barrier to early testing for many Fijians. He noted that individuals often feel uncomfortable seeking help at churches or hospitals due to societal perceptions. Some even experience rejection from their families and friends.

He emphasized that this behavior does not align with the true principles of Christianity and urged a shift away from traditional attitudes. “We need to foster acceptance in the community; we are all human beings, loved by God, and we must support one another,” Mr. Tugi stated. He added that caring for the vulnerable is a shared responsibility of the church, the community, and the government.

Mr. Tugi urged individuals to prioritize their health by getting tested, stating, “This is a matter of life and death. You need to help yourselves. Get tested.” He also highlighted the necessity of parents dedicating quality time to their children, noting that the family time spent today will shape the future of Fijian society.

He referenced Biblical teachings, explaining that there are only two key institutions: the family in the Old Testament and the church in the New Testament. Mr. Tugi warned that when families disintegrate, societal structures will also falter. He observed that the breakdown of family units is concerning, noting that couples and children often operate independently.

He cautioned that children may turn to peers for affirmation in the absence of parental guidance, seeking comfort from friends who may not provide the best counsel. “We may believe we can manage on our own, but the reality is that we cannot; it requires a multifaceted approach,” he concluded.
