“Reviving Families: The Key to Combating HIV/AIDS in Fiji”

Rev. Simione Tugi, the general secretary of the Fiji Council of Churches, has emphasized the critical role that families play in the battle against HIV/AIDS. He urged the public to visit medical facilities for testing, pointing out that stigma surrounding HIV contributes to a reluctance to seek early testing.

According to Mr. Tugi, many individuals hesitate to seek help from churches or hospitals due to societal judgments. He noted that some have even been ostracized by family members and friends, which he believes contradicts the true essence of Christianity. He advocated for a shift in mindset, calling for greater acceptance within the community, reminding everyone that all human beings are valued by God and that mutual care is essential.

Mr. Tugi reiterated that caring for vulnerable populations is a fundamental responsibility of the church and urged community support rather than neglect. He appealed to the public to prioritize their health by getting tested, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

He also stressed the need for parents to prioritize time spent with their children, asserting that family engagement is vital for the future of Fijian society. He referenced the Bible, noting the significance of family and church as vital institutions, warning that the breakdown of family units leads to societal deterioration.

Mr. Tugi observed that families today often operate separately, depriving children of parental presence and guidance. He warned that seeking validation from peers could lead youth astray, underscoring the necessity of a collective effort to address these challenges.
