Efforts to enhance civic pride and address waste management issues in Fiji are being prioritized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. Minister Mosese Bulitavu has highlighted the importance of collaborating with the Ministry of Local Government to tackle waste problems, especially in urban areas where littering has become rampant.

Recognizing the significant littering issues that plague streets across the country, Mr. Bulitavu emphasized the necessity of reviewing the Litter Act to bolster enforcement and support for waste management initiatives. Plans for a nationwide litter campaign are on the horizon, aiming to engage communities and promote responsible waste behaviors.

To facilitate better waste management, the ministry is considering innovative solutions, such as the introduction of color-coded bins for waste separation, inspired by successful models in other countries like New Zealand. This initiative could provide a structured approach to waste disposal and encourage citizen participation in maintaining cleaner environments.

In addition, Mr. Bulitavu announced that specialized training programs for investment officers will be developed to enhance their waste management capabilities. He noted the proactive measures taken by communities like Wainibuka, Tailevu, where effective litter training and waste management practices have been successfully implemented. These community-led initiatives may serve as a valuable model for replicating similar programs nationwide.

Building upon the previous discussions led by the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Sivendra Michael, there is a shared acknowledgment that while improvements in waste management are evident, more significant efforts are needed to sustain these advancements.
