To rejuvenate beef farming in Fiji, Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu has distributed breeding bulls to nine farmers in Navosa Province. This initiative follows Mr. Rayalu’s commitment made during a previous meeting at the Vatumali Government station, where he vowed to provide the farmers with F1 Senepol breed bulls.
Speaking to the farmers at the Botona settlement in Keiyasi on Thursday, Mr. Rayalu outlined the government’s plans to revitalize the beef industry. He highlighted the advantages of Senepol cattle, which are recognized for their ability to thrive in tropical conditions and produce high-quality meat.
“This initiative aims to enhance the genetic quality of the local cattle population, leading to improved meat quality, better disease resistance, and increased productivity—all vital for revitalizing the beef industry in Navosa Province,” Mr. Rayalu stated. He noted that Navosa had a rich history of beef farming, with many farmers actively raising cattle in the past. The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, is dedicated to reviving beef production in the region and encourages farmers to collaborate and strengthen their cluster farms.
Mr. Rayalu emphasized the ministry’s support in enhancing farming practices but reminded farmers that the responsibility lies with them to take initiative. “You need to be strong-willed and dedicated as farmers. The ministry has purchased these breeds from Australia in previous years and continues to conduct research and successful embryo transfers locally,” he added.
Currently, the Navosa Livestock Cooperative is organized into three clusters, comprising 196 registered beef farms in the area. Among these, 34 operate as commercial farms, 36 at a semi-commercial level, while the remaining 126 are subsistence farms.
