Revival of Public Works Department: Major Equipment Boost for Infrastructure

The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to resume operations vigorously following its reinstatement by the government last year. After being shut down by the previous administration, the PWD has recently enhanced its capabilities with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, delivered in Suva on Wednesday.

The official handover of these earthmoving equipment and trucks took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.

Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, stated that the timely arrival of the new machinery would significantly contribute to improving infrastructure and building capacity. He noted that these assets are part of a larger collection of new machinery and equipment for the ministry.

“These machines will enhance road standards and conditions, making it easier for economic activities to take place,” said Mr. Baleilevuka. He also emphasized their importance in improving the department’s ability to execute road construction and maintenance projects in rural and remote regions.

The newly received equipment includes:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck

The total value of the eight machines amounts to $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the Ministry is allocated $5 million dedicated to upgrading and enhancing rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new equipment and vehicles will play a pivotal role in upcoming projects.
