Revitalizing Roads: PWD’s Fresh Fleet Ignites Infrastructure Boost

The Public Works Department (PWD) is poised to make significant progress following its reinstatement by the government last year. Since its return a few months ago after being shut down by the previous administration, PWD’s operations have been revitalized with the recent acquisition of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, delivered in Suva on Wednesday.

The handover of the new equipment took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, emphasized that the timely arrival of these machines would bolster infrastructure efforts and enhance capacity building.

Mr. Baleilevuka remarked that the new machines are a vital addition to the ministry’s fleet. “These machines will improve road standards and conditions, facilitating better access for economic activities,” he stated. “They will also enhance our ability to conduct road construction and maintenance in rural and remote areas.”

The ministry received two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, with a total value of $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the ministry has been allocated $5 million to upgrade and enhance rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new equipment and vehicles would be utilized in upcoming projects.
