The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to begin operations following its reinstatement by the government last year. After being closed by the previous administration, PWD has received a boost in functionality with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers in Suva on Wednesday.
The handover ceremony took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, where officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport accepted the machinery. Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, noted that the prompt delivery of these machines would significantly improve infrastructure and support capacity building.
Mr. Baleilevuka emphasized that these machines are part of a new set of equipment intended for the ministry. He stated, “These machines will improve road standards and conditions and facilitate accessibility for economic activities.” He also added that this new equipment will enhance the department’s ability to carry out road construction and maintenance in rural and remote areas.
The ministry’s new acquisitions include two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, totaling a value of $1,627,104. For the current fiscal year, the Ministry has been allocated $5 million for the improvement and enhancement of rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new equipment and vehicles would be utilized in forthcoming projects.
