Revitalizing Narewa: Youth-Driven Agricultural Initiatives Flourish

A group of motivated young men and women in Narewa Village, Nadi, is working to enhance their community through various agricultural initiatives, particularly in farming. As members of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which comprises 69 individuals, including youth, they are dedicated to this cause.

Co-founder Buli Ratu noted that while the cooperative has been active since the 1960s, primarily focusing on cassava farming, it has evolved to include a broader range of agricultural and community service activities. “Currently, our cooperative includes 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men. We not only engage in agricultural efforts but also contribute to community projects, like village clean-ups for a healthier living environment,” Mr. Ratu remarked.

The cooperative achieved formal registration last year through the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, they received a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the expense subsidized by the government. “We are fortunate to now have a tractor for all land preparation tasks,” Mr. Ratu stated, adding that their determination allowed them to cover one-third of the tractor’s total cost.

Mr. Ratu emphasized the importance of unity in facing the challenges ahead, as the group employs the solesolevaki, or group work, method in their farming practices to support one another. The Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has also secured a contract with Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, supplying vegetables and cassava.

Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu highlighted that engaging youth in agriculture is crucial for building stronger and more productive communities.
