Revitalizing Fiji's Sugar Industry: A Call for Change

Revitalizing Fiji’s Sugar Industry: A Call for Change

The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has voiced its strong backing for the recommendations made by Arvind Singh, a prominent sugarcane farmer and former board member of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). Singh’s call for implementing cost-cutting measures is seen as crucial for revitalizing Fiji’s struggling sugar industry, which has been suffering due to years of neglect and mismanagement.

NCCI president Dr. Ram Raju highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that the sugar industry is currently in a deplorable condition. He noted that while the global sugar market faces instability from oversupply and declining demand, there is still potential for profitability within Fiji’s industry. Dr. Raju proposed the establishment of two modern state-of-the-art sugar mills on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, asserting that for a nation producing approximately one million tonnes of sugarcane with 10,500 active cane farmers, this approach would enhance efficiency significantly.

Echoing sentiments found in earlier discussions, Singh and Dr. Raju emphasized the necessity of reforming the management of small, mismanaged farms by combining resources to form larger, more sustainable operations. Both advocates are urging for immediate action as the situation becomes increasingly dire, with decreasing sugarcane yields and an aging workforce observable across the sector.

The optimism shared by these industry leaders reflects a consensus that with strategic reforms, better resource management, and collaborative efforts among stakeholders—including farmers, government officials, and industry leaders—there remains an opportunity to breathe new life into Fiji’s sugar sector. This collective vision is essential as Fiji’s sugar industry has historically played a pivotal role in the national economy, supporting thousands of livelihoods.

Positive developments are underway, with discussions emphasizing the importance of accountability and innovation to rejuvenate the sugar industry. By fostering improved practices and more impactful partnerships, the path to recovery and sustainability appears achievable for Fiji’s crucial agricultural sector.
