Timoci Volavola, the interim head coach of the Fijiana 7s team, is revamping the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season. With the departure of most seasoned players from last season, only Ana Maria Naimasi remains to bring experience to the new lineup. Following a disappointing 12th place finish at the Paris Olympic Games this past August, Volavola is optimistic that his new group will reinvigorate support for women’s sevens rugby.

The former assistant national coach is set to announce his final 12-member team after the players’ medical evaluations are completed. He has noted significant improvement among the new recruits since they began training together, a development he views as a positive indicator for the team’s potential.

Volavola acknowledges the difficult journey ahead, reflecting on last year’s struggles, yet he is committed to making necessary changes. He aims to establish a respectful team culture, emphasizing discipline and a positive attitude both on and off the field. Those who do not fit this new structure will be removed to maintain a healthy environment.

His primary goal is to secure a position within the top eight of the core teams in the series, a challenge that will be tested as they face strong opponents like Australia, Ireland, and China in Pool A. Volavola understands the need for the team to recover well from their lengthy travel before facing these formidable rivals.

“Each team has improved since last year, so we have to work hard to meet our goals,” he stated, conveying his determination and encouraging spirit.

Former sevens player Emosi Mulevoro is joining Volavola in his coaching efforts, providing additional support to the team as they embark on this new journey.

This fresh start for the Fijiana 7s team represents a hopeful turning point, and with a commitment to hard work and discipline, there is optimism for a brighter future in the sport. The team’s openness to learn and adapt bodes well as they strive to elevate their performance and regain the confidence of supporters.
