The Public Works Department (PWD) has officially become a legal entity within the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. In a positive move towards improving infrastructure, heavy road construction machinery branded with “PWD” is now operational in regions that require immediate attention for accessing and upgrading roads.
Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the dire condition of many rural and maritime roads, which were neglected under the previous administration. Previously, roads not included in the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) inventory were classified as non-FRA roads, which meant they received little to no maintenance. The current Coalition Government has recognized this issue and made it a priority to restore the PWD to ensure that all roads receive the necessary attention.
Minister Tuisawau mentioned that the government has invested in new construction equipment that is now stationed at the Ministry’s divisional depots located in Suva, Lautoka, and Labasa. The PWD is actively engaged in road works across several locations, including Nasereilagi, Nalidi, Roma in Ra, Naisogo in Naitasiri, Nasealevu in Macuata, and Vanuabalavu in Lau.
This proactive approach not only aims to enhance road accessibility but also demonstrates the government’s commitment to address infrastructure needs and improve the quality of life for residents in these areas.
In summary, the reinstatement of the PWD and the deployment of heavy machinery signal a renewed focus on road maintenance and development, which can lead to better transport links and stronger communities. It’s an encouraging development for the nation’s infrastructure and its citizens.
