Revitalizing Faith: The Methodist Church’s New Mission for Youths

The Methodist Church in Fiji is shifting its focus to the youth as it confronts escalating social challenges within society. Iliesa Koroi, the department secretary who was unanimously reappointed at the church’s recent conference, emphasized that addressing the needs of younger members will be his top priority during his new term.

“I believe it is God’s calling for me, and my goal is to concentrate on our youths,” Koroi stated. He acknowledged that while he has always prioritized youth initiatives, this year will see an intensified effort.

Koroi mentioned a virtual youth night that has attracted numerous participants from this demographic. “One of our greatest successes has been helping young people resist the temptations of pornography and drug addiction,” he noted.

The church’s programming includes visitation, evangelism, and a discipleship process aimed at saving souls, particularly among youth who are susceptible to issues such as HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancies, pornography, and substance abuse.

He highlighted that the government cannot tackle these problems alone, urging church ministers to take more active roles. “The government already has its hands full and won’t manage these issues by themselves,” he said.

Koroi pointed out that the church’s youth evangelism team consists of individuals who were once caught up in these social challenges but are now instrumental in helping others. “Wherever I go, I reach out to young people involved in these issues and invite them to join me,” he explained, noting their surprise at receiving support and understanding from someone who sees beyond their past mistakes.
