Revitalizing Faith: The Methodist Church of Fiji Confronts Tough Questions

Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, President of the Methodist Church of Fiji, emphasized the need for the Church to enhance its role as a moral compass for the nation and to act as responsible citizens. During the annual conference held in Suva, he highlighted the importance of addressing ongoing social issues that affect the Church and expressed hope that delegates would tackle these challenges throughout the week.

Rev. Turagavou posed several critical questions regarding the Church’s current state, including the decline in membership, the vocal opposition to poor leadership and moral shortcomings, and the departure of affiliated members. He raised concerns about the Church’s struggles with excessive kava consumption and smoking among its members, and questioned the lack of measures to assess attitudes toward immoral behavior and leadership misconduct. He also sought to know what vision and mindset the Church needs to restore its reputation.

Rev. Turagavou pointed out that Fiji is facing various complex issues like rising drug-related incidents, crime, violence, human trafficking, and homelessness. He questioned the Church’s approach to same-sex marriage, interfaith relations, and political and traditional matters.

“The Church faces challenges in fulfilling its prophetic role and serving as a support for the nation,” he stated. He called for collaboration with local communities and the government to explore the root causes of these issues and identify potential solutions. He reiterated the need to fortify the Church’s position as the conscience of the State and as engaged citizens of Fiji. The conference continues today.
