The Public Works Department (PWD) is gearing up for its operations following its reinstatement by the Government last year. After several months of closure under the previous administration, PWD’s activities have received a boost with the recent acquisition of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, which were delivered in Suva on Wednesday.
The official handover of the machinery took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.
Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the Ministry, remarked that the timely arrival of the new equipment would significantly improve infrastructure and contribute to capacity building. He highlighted that this equipment represents a new set of machines designated for the ministry.
Baleilevuka stated, “These machines will enhance road standards and conditions, facilitating better accessibility for economic activities.” He noted that the equipment would also bolster the ministry’s efforts to carry out road construction and maintenance in rural and remote areas.
The received equipment includes two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, collectively valued at $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the Ministry has been allocated $5 million to upgrade and improve rural roads. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new machines and vehicles would be utilized in forthcoming projects.
