Surendra Lal, a notable figure, stated that Fijians of Indian descent in Labasa were specifically targeted during the coups. Speaking at the Truth and Reconciliation steering committee’s consultations in Labasa, he mentioned that these individuals faced threats and mistreatment, which has led to a breakdown of trust with the disciplined forces.
Lal noted that canefarmers were particularly singled out in the 1987 coup, recalling that they were taken from their homes and forced to walk barefoot to detention camps. He expressed that an apology is warranted for the injustices they endured.
He voiced concerns over the lack of communication from authorities regarding reconciliation with those affected by the coups, stating, “We have lost faith.”
In response, steering committee chair Sashi Kiran emphasized that the commission would be inclusive, aiming to address the grievances of all ethnic groups in the country. She reassured that the commission would serve to hear a wide range of issues, focusing on national reconciliation rather than individual grievances.
