Review of Vessel Purchases Sparks Controversy in Fiji!

The Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has initiated a comprehensive review of the process involved in purchasing vessels in Fiji. This decision follows concerns regarding the arrival of a new vessel that was not surveyed by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). Ro Filipe noted that MSAF was only informed of the vessel’s arrival on December 31, despite the vessel having departed from South Korea on December 19.

Due to unforeseen political disturbances in South Korea, MSAF’s team was unable to conduct the customary technical verification assessment and physical survey prior to the vessel’s arrival. Ro Filipe expressed dissatisfaction with the current operational processes and stressed the necessity for his team to adopt a more innovative and proactive approach. He emphasized that while he is a political leader and not a manager, there is a collective responsibility for his ministry to improve operational efficiency.

To ensure that vessel operators do not proceed with purchases without MSAF clearance, the minister highlighted the importance of enhanced coordination regarding clearance procedures from the ship’s originating port. He has permitted MSAF to undertake the necessary technical assessments and collaborate with the vessel’s owner to address any issues before issuing a license. Additionally, MSAF will consult on environmental and other concerns as part of this process.

Furthermore, MSAF is set to work alongside vessel owners and Fiji Ports to eliminate unserviceable vessels and will review its processes and regulations to improve coordination with relevant stakeholders involved in vessel acquisition.

Ro Filipe acknowledged the challenges faced in the maritime shipping industry and expressed gratitude to operators for their essential services. He also mentioned that a broader review of the transport industry, including maritime services, is underway, with the Terms of Reference (ToR) currently being finalized.

This proactive approach by Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau not only addresses immediate issues within vessel management and safety but also sets the foundation for a more efficient and coordinated maritime industry in Fiji. The commitment to reassess and improve operational procedures reflects a positive step toward ensuring safer practices in maritime transport, which is vital for the country’s economic backbone.

In summary, the review is not merely a reaction to recent events but a critical move to strengthen the maritime framework in Fiji, ensuring safety and operational integrity while fostering innovation within the industry.
