Reverend Lal Mohammed has quickly gained attention on social media, with his impactful sermon even being shared on the controversial ChatFiji forum. His message resonates beyond the Methodist Church, prompting reflection across various Christian denominations and beliefs.
Reverend Lal delivered his sermon in a blend of three iTaukei dialects—Lauan, Nadroga, and Bauan—alongside English. This interaction took place on Friday at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
In an interview, Reverend Lal shared how he learned the iTaukei language, stating he was born in Lau, where the Lauan dialect was predominant due to the small Indian population. After moving to Nadroga, he adopted the local dialect and later became familiar with Bauan. He recounted his childhood in Nakalavo, where his father served as a lay preacher, and noted that speaking the iTaukei language was a part of his daily life. He emphasized that despite their Muslim-sounding surname, his family did not practice Islam, as they embraced Methodist beliefs.
When asked about his sermon preparation and its purpose, Reverend Lal explained that he focused on the conference theme and drew inspiration from the Bible to address the spiritual challenges many face. He highlighted the need for open discussions about these issues, asserting that the Holy Spirit inspired him to speak on the significance of embodying Christ’s image, especially as a leader in Fiji’s largest denomination.
Reflecting on his journey, Reverend Lal revealed that his aspiration to become a reverend began in childhood. Through his experiences working on farms and in garment factories, and accompanying his father on preaching engagements, he felt a strong calling to assist Indo-Fijians who may be struggling spiritually. He expressed gratitude for being empowered by the Holy Spirit to transition from the iTaukei to the Indian Division of the church, even learning Hindi along the way.
He shared his ministry experiences across various regions, including Sigatoka, Navua, Nadi Circuit, Labasa, Rakiraki, the Dilkusha Indian Circuit, and his current position in the Dudley Circuit.
In his personal life, Reverend Lal mentioned that his wife, who was Hindu at the time of their marriage, later embraced Christianity after experiencing a transformative moment with God. Together, they have a daughter and a son.
