Reverend Calls for Family Focus Amid Rising Child Neglect in Fiji

Reverend Semisi Turagavou, the President of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma, has called on parents to take their responsibilities seriously amid growing worries about child neglect.

A recent report from the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection indicates that 76 percent of children suffering from abuse and neglect in Fiji come from Christian households. The findings also highlight that 75 percent of these affected children are iTaukei. Reverend Turagavou expressed concern over the significant involvement of Christian families in these issues, which he believes casts a negative light on the community.

“We acknowledge that there is a problem, and we will not shy away from it,” stated Reverend Turagavou. He emphasized that the church accepts full responsibility, noting that social problems within families continue to rise despite various awareness initiatives.

In response to these social challenges affecting families and children, the church is contemplating the reduction of some activities conducted by its circuits. Reverend Turagavou pointed out that certain church programs often consume time that could be spent with family, a sentiment shared by many members.

He noted that an excessive focus on church activities has a detrimental effect on family time. “We are trying to strengthen the family unit, which is where we should start. Otherwise, the negative effects will eventually impact the children,” he remarked.

Reverend Turagavou concluded by stating that efforts will be made to collaborate with the congregation to reinforce family connections, which he believes will contribute to resolving these pressing issues.
