The Ministry of Education has announced plans to reintroduce interviews for Year 13 students who wish to pursue careers in teaching. This initiative involves collaboration with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS). The goal is to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training throughout Fiji.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro highlighted the significance of a thorough selection process designed to attract candidates who are both passionate and well-qualified for the teaching profession. This initiative is part of the broader 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which aims to strengthen partnerships among stakeholders and the Ministry of Education. The declaration’s objective is to ensure that graduates are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in classrooms across the nation.
Eligible students can apply for scholarships under the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, providing support for various Bachelor of Education programs and specialized fields such as Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for online applications to the TSLS is set for January 31, 2025, with successful candidates receiving notifications about interview dates and venues through email and phone calls.
In summary, this initiative marks a significant step toward elevating the standards of teaching in Fiji, ensuring that aspiring educators receive adequate training and support. It opens doors for young individuals interested in making a positive impact in education, fostering a new generation of capable teachers. This renewed focus on quality teacher recruitment promises to enhance the educational landscape in Fiji, ultimately benefiting students and communities alike.
