The Ministry of Education has announced the reintroduction of interviews for Year 13 students who wish to pursue careers in teaching. This initiative, which involves collaboration with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), aims to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training throughout Fiji.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted the importance of a thorough selection process to attract candidates who are both committed and qualified for the teaching profession. This effort is part of the broader 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which focuses on enhancing partnerships among various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, to ensure that graduates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes for success in the classroom.
Students who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for scholarships under the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, targeting various Bachelor of Education programs and specialized areas such as Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for online applications to the TSLS is set for January 31, 2025. Successful candidates will be informed about interview dates and locations through email and phone notifications.
This initiative is a positive development for Fiji’s education system, as it can help cultivate a new generation of skilled and dedicated educators who can make a significant impact in their communities. The focus on rigorous selection processes ensures that only the most passionate individuals are chosen to shape the future of education in Fiji.
In summary, the reintroduction of interviews marks a commitment to enhancing educational standards in Fiji and ensuring that future teachers are well-prepared for the challenges of the profession.
