“Revamping Fiji’s Water Services: A Game-Changer for Grassroots Communities?”

The Coalition Government is working to enhance international initiatives aimed at improving water services in Fiji due to the constraints of the country’s financial resources. Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, highlighted the essential connection between water delivery and energy access, stating that the water-energy nexus must be a key consideration in climate financing discussions.

Ro Filipe emphasized the importance of effectively utilizing available opportunities, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, where access to basic utilities such as water and energy is crucial for daily life, especially for local communities. He pointed out that the focus should extend beyond water and energy to include infrastructure like roads.

Tuisawau called for the promotion of water-energy solutions at the grassroots level to help combat poverty and make a significant impact on everyday lives. He stressed the importance of focusing on this nexus within the context of climate financing, particularly when exploring natural spring and groundwater resources through innovative technologies like solar-powered borehole pumps and desalination plants.

He noted that these challenges could be addressed through creative programs that utilize smart national frameworks, which would be especially beneficial for coastal communities. Additionally, he announced a new initiative by the Coalition Government, which has received Cabinet approval to develop a policy framework for compensating landowners for standing trees in catchment areas.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to listening to all stakeholders, especially landowners, and addressing their concerns within existing legal structures.
