The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development in Fiji is initiating a thorough review of the Integrated Rural Development Framework (IRDF), a crucial move aimed at enhancing coordination and integration in rural development planning and programs throughout the country. This initiative aligns with the priorities outlined in the Fiji National Development Plan (NDP) 2025 – 2029, which emphasizes the necessity of developing rural areas as part of a broader objective of fostering sustainable growth and resilience in rural and island communities.

The IRDF is designated as a key target for revision, designed to create pathways for socioeconomic development that will benefit rural populations. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme’s Governance for Resilient Developments in the Pacific Project, this review will ensure that rural development strategies are better aligned with national policies while adequately addressing the specific needs of rural communities.

The ultimate aim is to establish a National Rural Development Policy (NDRP) focused on elevating rural households out of poverty. This policy will tackle critical issues such as access to safe drinking water, sanitation, electricity, and transportation, while also promoting secure employment, education, and resilience against disasters and climate change.

The review seeks to harmonize rural development initiatives across various government sectors, emphasizing resource allocation to effectively meet the unique needs of these areas. By prioritizing local perspectives and addressing essential services and sustainable livelihoods, the IRDF review aims to unlock the economic and social potential inherent in Fiji’s rural and maritime zones, which are rich in natural, cultural, and human resources.

Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the importance of this review as a means of creating a more inclusive development strategy. He underlined that by actively listening to the aspirations of rural communities, the government is making significant strides toward sustainable and resilient growth.

The Ministry is encouraging engagement from all stakeholders, including community leaders, civil society, development partners, and the private sector, to participate in this critical process. Nationwide consultations will commence with the Central Division on November 14–15, inviting widespread input and collaboration in strengthening the vital role that rural communities play in Fiji’s overall prosperity.

This review not only represents a step forward in policy and planning but also instills hope for the people in rural areas, signaling that their voices will be heard and their needs addressed. By revitalizing development frameworks, Fiji can unlock potential growth and innovation, creating a brighter future for its rural communities.
