Netball Fiji’s president, RubyAnn Sorovaki, emphasized the importance of enhancing local netball competitions this year to foster growth in the sport. She highlighted that improving the quality and frequency of these tournaments would be instrumental in forming a broader training squad for the national teams.
Sorovaki pointed out that intensifying competitions is crucial for identifying talent suitable for high-performance teams. This includes creating clear pathways from club-level play to national representation. By hosting and conducting high-quality matches, a larger pool of players can be evaluated for selection at all levels.
Additionally, she underscored the critical role of grassroots initiatives in developing the sport. The federation plans to collaborate closely with various stakeholders to support districts in organizing games and building capacity among members.
In related news, the Fiji Pearls’ extended squad will regroup for fitness testing today at the High-Performance Unit Gym in Laucala, where 56 players have been named. Interim head coach Jioweli Vakamoce will oversee the training sessions.
This renewed focus on local competitions and player development bodes well for the future of netball in Fiji, promising to enhance the talent pipeline and foster a competitive spirit among players at all levels. Such initiatives can invigorate the sport and inspire upcoming athletes to reach their full potential.
