Revamping Fiji’s Mahogany Laws: What’s Next?

The Cabinet has approved a review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced that MIDA 2010 established the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 concerns the licensing and branding of Fiji Mahogany.

Kamikamica noted that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, recommended this legislative review to tackle challenges faced by stakeholders in the mahogany sector. The upcoming examination of MIDA 2010 and MILBA 2011 aims to assess the effectiveness of the Mahogany Industry Council and facilitate further growth of the mahogany industry, enhancing the recognition of Fiji’s hardwood products both domestically and internationally.
