The Cabinet has sanctioned a review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica explained that the MIDA 2010 creates the Mahogany Industry Council, while the MILBA 2011 outlines the licensing and branding requirements for Fiji Mahogany. Kamikamica noted that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, recommended this legislative review to tackle challenges faced by stakeholders in the mahogany sector. The review is expected to assess the role of the Mahogany Industry Council and facilitate the growth of the mahogany industry, while also enhancing the recognition of the quality of Fiji’s hardwood products both domestically and globally.
