The Fijian Cabinet has approved a review of agriculture-related legislation, a crucial step towards enhancing the country’s agricultural framework. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the importance of this legislative framework in promoting sustainable development, ensuring food and nutrition security, alleviating poverty, and strengthening the resilience of rural and vulnerable communities.

Rabuka pointed out that the current agricultural laws are encountering substantial challenges arising from dynamic changes in economic conditions, geographical factors, and climate variability. The review aims to align the legislation with the best international practices and standards as well as adapt to the ever-evolving agricultural landscape.

To ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach, an extensive consultation process will be undertaken during the review phase.

This legislative overhaul presents an opportunity for Fiji to reinforce its agricultural sector’s sustainability and resilience, ensuring that it can meet the challenges posed by modern-day demands while supporting local communities.

Overall, this initiative signals a proactive approach to adapting agricultural practices, which holds potential benefits for both the economy and the well-being of Fijian citizens in the near future.
