Opposition MP Virendra Lal is urging the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations to enhance the regulations governing amusement rides, emphasizing the need for safety to prevent potential accidents. His call for action follows a recent incident involving a Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens, which fortunately did not result in fatalities.
Lal argues that it is imperative for authorities to prioritize public safety by implementing strict safety measures, which include ongoing inspections and maintenance of all amusement rides. He stressed the importance of taking decisive action, proposing that unsafe rides be shut down until they can be verified as safe.
“The safety of our people is a serious matter; we cannot afford any more tragic incidents,” Lal stated. He referred to the current situation as a serious wake-up call, particularly in light of last year’s tragic accident at the Fiji Showcase that claimed a young woman’s life.
As Shadow Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lal expressed deep concerns over the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department’s oversight, noting significant deficiencies in their safety protocols. He pointed to a previous incident on August 1st, where a malfunctioning ride endangered a child’s life, underlining the urgent need for reform in safety standards.
Lal concluded by reiterating that the safety of children should never be compromised, and called for immediate actions to rectify these alarming safety shortcomings.
This incident serves as a crucial opportunity for lawmakers and safety regulators to renew their commitment to public safety and to implement necessary changes. With increased scrutiny and proactive measures, there is hope for creating a safer environment for families enjoying amusement rides in the future.
