The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens tournament is set to take place from December 12 to 14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. In an effort to enhance the excitement and competitiveness of the event, tournament director Solo Finau announced the introduction of new by-laws that will include a bonus points system designed to benefit all participating teams.

Finau is optimistic about attracting 80 teams across four tiers of competition. The format will feature Tier One for champion teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for Under-19 teams. This restructuring aims to rejuvenate interest in sevens tournaments throughout the country while also providing financial benefits to the teams and fostering player development.

He emphasized that the changes in competition format will help local players learn to perform under pressure. “The World Cups have been won by drop goals; why can’t we use it? Teams should not only come to compete but to win by utilizing what comes naturally,” Finau noted.

In addition to the innovative format, players will have the opportunity to earn instant rewards immediately following their matches. For instance, an individual player who scores a coast-to-coast try starting from their own “In-Goal space” will receive $100 on the spot. Other rewards will be given for various achievements, including the most converted tries, drop goals, and penalties, with each of those teams earning $100 after the tournament.

Moreover, the tournament will challenge teams to beat Alosio Naduva’s impressive 6.78-second record for the fastest team try. If a team matches or exceeds this time or completes a try within 7 seconds without stoppages, they will also receive $100 at the end of that match.

This tournament, which has been sanctioned by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), will officially kick off on December 6.

This initiative is not just about competition; it’s a celebration of rugby that integrates innovation and rewards, ensuring players and teams are motivated to give their best on the field. It reflects a positive trend towards enhancing sports culture and community engagement in the region.
