The Suva Western Bus Stand is currently undergoing significant renovations following the demolition of 23 bean cart stalls, some of which have been operational for over twenty years. This redevelopment initiative aims to modernize the area and create better business opportunities for local vendors.
Vendor Rakesh Kumar, who has been running a bean cart and juice stall for two decades, expressed his support for this transformation after lengthy discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC). He stated, “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months. They’ve assured us that our spots will remain after the rebuild. It’s time to let go of the old structures and embrace new, modern models that will help grow our businesses.”
According to the SCC, concerns about hygiene and reports of unsuitable activities have been significant factors prompting the redevelopment efforts. The newly designed stalls will adopt a contemporary look reminiscent of those at the Suva Municipal Market, aimed at creating a more conducive business environment.
Long-time vendor Filisita Sameke also voiced her approval of the council’s proactive measures. She noted, “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient. The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers.”
The improvements are expected to enhance the overall atmosphere of the bus stand, creating a safer and cleaner space for both vendors and their customers. Developers have ensured that the construction will take approximately two to three months, with minimal disruption to the vendors. Currently, these vendors pay up to $32.70 per week for their stalls, and many believe the investment in the new structure will be worthwhile.
Overall, the transformation of the Suva Western Bus Stand presents an optimistic vision for the future, promising a more vibrant and inviting environment that fosters local businesses and improves customer experience. The ability to modernize the area, while retaining the existing vendors, demonstrates a collaborative effort that could lead to enhanced economic opportunities for the local community.
