The 1987 coup in Fiji transformed the lives of many Indo-Fijian families, including the lineage of Aladutta Lone from Solovi in Nadi. In its aftermath, numerous relatives sought stability and opportunities abroad, a trend echoed in the story of Irshaad Nabi’s family.

Nabi recalls that his family continued their education by attending Nadi Muslim College during this tumultuous time. Many of his uncles, who had settled in Toronto, persuaded his father, Rahmat Nabi, to also consider migrating. In 1990, they made the significant decision to move to Canada, embracing new beginnings despite the challenges of adjusting to a foreign land.

Through hard work and determination, Mr. Nabi earned a qualification as a licensed automotive technician, establishing a successful career in the automotive industry. Today, he serves as a technical advisor for a fleet management company and expresses pride in the accomplishments of his family since their migration. Mr. Nabi is happily married and has two children, Sufyaan and Aaisha, whom he endeavors to provide with the opportunities he once received.

The family’s story is intertwined with the bonds of kinship that extend across continents. About 15 years ago, a meeting with Ifzal Butt’s family in Toronto, also with roots in Shopian, India, reignited their ancestral connections. This eventually led to reunions with family members like Kaiser Lone in the UK, who shares a direct lineage.

Kaiser, who had long heard of distant relatives in Fiji, was able to meet Irshaad’s family six years ago, initiating a series of emotional reunions marked by nostalgia and gratitude. The journey continued, culminating in a transformative trip for Kaiser and his mother in November 2024. They traveled to New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji, experiencing an incredible reunion that brought together generations of family, sharing stories and rekindling connections that time had split apart.

This unifying journey not only reconnects families but instills a deeper understanding of heritage and belonging, transcending geographical distances. Mr. Nabi now seeks to complete the circle by visiting India and Pakistan, continuing to weave the threads of family history and connection started by his ancestors.
