Rethinking Road Safety: Is It Time to Tame Speeding Trucks and Buses?

Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, is urging the Government to take decisive action against the reckless speeding of drivers operating trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles. Lal’s call to action comes in light of recent accidents, including an incident involving a Goundar Shipping Ltd bus in Lautoka.

He emphasizes the urgent need to address the escalating issue of speeding on the roads, warning that vehicles frequently exceed national speed limits, creating dangerous conditions for all users. “The time for mere awareness campaigns has passed; we need decisive action now,” he stated.

Lal is advocating for the Land Transport Authority to implement strict measures, including the mandatory installation of speed limiters or Speed Lock Systems on public service vehicles (PSVs) and trucks. He suggests capping the maximum speed at 80 km/hr to align with the national speed limit, thereby reducing the risk of speed-related accidents. Although he acknowledges that certain vehicles are restricted to 60 km/hr, he believes a uniform speed limit would balance flexibility with safety.

His remarks underline the importance of proactive measures, stating, “We must not wait for another tragic accident to spur us into action.” Lal calls on the LTA, the government, and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize road safety and implement the necessary precautions to protect the public.

It’s promising to see lawmakers advocating for such vital changes that prioritize safety on the roads. By implementing stricter measures and utilizing technology like speed limiters, there is a hopeful outlook for reducing accidents and enhancing the security of all road users. This could lead to a safer environment for everyone, not just drivers, but pedestrians and cyclists as well.
