Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has expressed his belief that his ministry may not be the most suitable entity to tackle the multifaceted issue of drug abuse in Fiji. During a recent address at a Rotary Club of Labasa fundraiser, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized that while the Home Affairs Ministry plays a role in enforcing drug laws, the root causes of the drug problem require a more holistic approach that would be better served by a ministry focusing on social protection.
He noted that by the time police intervenes, it is often too late, as drugs have already been consumed or sold. “Using force is not a solution to this issue,” he remarked. Instead, he advocates for addressing the drug problem at its core to make a meaningful impact.
Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted ongoing efforts to collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to secure improved resources for the Narcotics Unit, aimed at enhancing their ability to confront this pressing social issue. He also called for input from civil society, emphasizing that community involvement plays a vital role in national efforts to combat drug-related problems, as the impacts of substance abuse touch every community.
This acknowledgement of the complexity of drug issues and the call for a collaborative approach can provide hope for more effective strategies in dealing with substance abuse in Fiji. Greater involvement from various ministries and the community could lead to a more comprehensive plan aimed at prevention, education, and recovery rather than solely enforcement.
