Rethink Your Road Routines: Avoid Accidents This Weekend!

Drivers are urged to plan their journeys in advance to minimize the risk of speeding-related accidents. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana highlighted the importance of time management as major events take place this weekend, warning that rushing could lead to reckless driving.

“Every day we are ticketing drivers for speeding, and we are concerned that poor time management will lead to more people exceeding speed limits,” SSP Divuana stated. He criticized drivers who ignore speed regulations as being selfish and inconsiderate of the safety of others.

“When individuals are pressed for time, they often speed, which is a well-documented factor in accidents and fatalities. Drivers must recognize that speeding endangers everyone on the road and has consequences that extend beyond simply breaking the law,” he added.

SSP Divuana emphasized the role of the community in promoting road safety. “Passengers should speak out against risky driving behavior. If you are part of a traveling group, ensure that everything is prepared in advance to help the driver avoid feeling rushed,” he advised.

The Fiji Police Force reiterated that speeding heightens the likelihood of accidents, as it reduces a driver’s reaction time and control over their vehicle. “Speeding also exacerbates the seriousness of injuries sustained during accidents and increases the emotional trauma for the victims’ families,” warned SSP Divuana.

He concluded by urging all drivers to practice safe driving habits at all times to prevent accidents.
