Restoring Sight: A Bright Journey for Patients in Fiji

Spread the love

Thirty patients at the Pacific Eye Institute experienced a remarkable moment yesterday as the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team from China removed their surgical dressings.

Zhou Jian, the Chinese ambassador to Fiji, highlighted the significant impact of the Bright Journey team, stating that they have enabled not only these patients but also around 100 people across the Pacific region to reclaim their lives. “Thus far, they have successfully performed 100 cataract surgeries in the Pacific,” Mr. Zhou noted, emphasizing the importance of these medical interventions in restoring sight to Fijians.

He explained that these surgeries have not only improved the patients’ vision but also reinstated their roles as key contributors to their families. Many of these individuals were once the primary breadwinners but were unable to provide for their families due to their eye conditions. “Most importantly, they bring hope to families, as some patients could not support their loved ones because of their eye problems,” he said.

Last year, the medical team achieved a remarkable milestone by performing 60 cataract surgeries. This year, they have already completed half of their target of 60 surgeries, with plans to finish another 30 in the coming days. “I’m overjoyed for the patients; when I unveil their eyes, it’s heartwarming to see the light coming back into their eyes,” Mr. Zhou expressed.

The efforts of the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team not only represent a medical success but also foster a sense of hope and community resilience in the Pacific region. These initiatives remind us of the power of international cooperation in healthcare, which can transform lives and restore dignity to those facing challenging circumstances.
