A restaurant owner is facing significant challenges after his establishment was targeted by burglars. Harminder Singh, the director of Maya Dhaba, a well-known Indian cuisine restaurant located in Suva, was dismayed to learn that his office had been ransacked, with a substantial amount of cash and alcohol stolen.
Having just celebrated a successful holiday season, Singh had felt a sense of joy after hosting a large event at his restaurant. However, he was abruptly confronted with the distressing news when staff members discovered the back door open upon arriving for work the following morning. Investigations revealed that the intruders had broken into the office, pried open the cash register, and depleted the alcohol cabinet.
While the precise value of the stolen items is still being calculated, Singh estimates that between $10,000 and $15,000 was taken. He highlighted that this amount represented earnings for the week and included wages for employees who do not yet have bank accounts, further complicating the situation as they are due for payment on Tuesdays.
As crime rates have reportedly increased in the area, Singh expressed the need for amplified police presence in Suva and called upon the community to foster a sense of civic pride and responsibility. He pointed out that being an Australian-based business since 2007, the majority of his customers are not locals, making this unfortunate incident a considerable setback.
The local police have confirmed that they are investigating the case, with a report filed at the Totogo station.
In this challenging time, the community’s response to support local businesses and enhance safety can forge stronger connections among residents and help create a more secure environment. In the face of adversity, Mr. Singh’s resilient spirit and call for collaboration could inspire collective action towards improving safety in the area.
