The Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Ministry’s National Occupational Health and Safety Services is currently investigating the tragic drowning of a 50-year-old Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka, which took place on November 4. The incident happened around 8:00 AM while the tourist was swimming alone.
Initial investigations indicate that a thorough assessment is necessary to determine whether the resort had adequate safety protocols in place for guest activities, such as supervision, rescue, and evacuation procedures. To further the inquiry, the National Occupational Health and Safety Services is working with the Fiji Police Force to secure medical and autopsy reports.
Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized the importance of the resort’s management in recognizing potential hazards and developing effective control strategies to avert similar incidents in the future. “The hotel management must adequately identify all potential hazards and implement appropriate control strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Singh stated, underscoring the need for systemic improvements.
The National Occupational Health and Safety Services will compile a comprehensive report upon completion of their investigation, which also aligns with their ongoing efforts to inspect workplaces, including resorts, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and enforcing necessary corrective actions.
In conclusion, while this is a tragic incident, it also highlights the critical need for rigorous safety measures in the hospitality industry. The outcome of this investigation could lead to strengthened protocols that promote safer environments for tourists, ultimately enhancing their overall experience in Fiji.
