The Uto ni Yalo has arrived in Tonga for the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting following a challenging week at sea. The crew conveyed a message that resonates with the 2024 Pacific Islands Forum theme, “Transformative Resilient Pasifiki: Build Better Now,” which emphasizes the importance of peace, prosperity, and resilience in the region.
This voyage underscored the significance of traditional voyaging, sustainable sea transport, and the health of ocean ecosystems. Margaret Tabunakawai-Vakalalabure, Chair of the Uto Ni Yalo Trustees, drew parallels between the hurdles faced during the journey and the larger challenges confronting Pacific Regionalism, calling for unified efforts for the welfare of the Pacific and its inhabitants.
The arrival of the Uto ni Yalo spotlighted the urgency of sustainable ocean management and the protection of marine resources, particularly as leaders convened to discuss the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. While in Nuku’alofa, the vessel engaged with Pacific leaders and communities to tackle pressing issues.
The overarching message of the voyage emphasized that the ocean, regarded as an “Ocean of Peace,” fosters connectivity among islands and merits utmost respect. Ian Chute from Blue Prosperity Fiji accentuated the critical nature of sustainable ocean management and regional collaboration. The voyage received support from multiple organizations, including the Waitt Institute, Blue Prosperity Coalition, Oceans 5, and Greenpeace Australia Pacific.
