Resilient Grandma Turns Hobby into Success Story

Asena Naiwase, a single mother from Delaitokatoka, Kalabu, has persevered through numerous challenges in life. At 60 years old, she continues to defy expectations, having successfully raised her three children who are now adults with families and jobs of their own.

Despite her children’s independence, Asena shows no signs of retirement. She can often be seen selling perfumes and her handcrafted jewelry on the streets of Suva. What began as a hobby five years ago transformed into a fulfilling income source when she realized her talent for creating beautiful pieces.

“This has become one of my favorite hobbies, along with meeting people, helping those in need, and baking,” Asena shared. Initially, she sold vegetables, but her younger daughter inspired her to explore jewelry making and even taught her how to design earrings and necklaces.

Under her daughter’s guidance, who learned from DIY videos on social media, Asena honed her skills. “My daughter frequently uses the internet and learned techniques from YouTube which she then taught me,” she explained.

Starting her venture with perfumes brought back by her son-in-law from Iraq, Asena expanded her offerings after customers expressed interest in handmade earrings and necklaces. Now, she purchases raw materials and creates her own jewelry.

Asena finds joy in her work as it not only provides financial empowerment but also allows her to connect with various people. “I meet new customers every day and make many friends. This job is less stressful, and I enjoy the flexibility of working on my schedule,” she noted.

Her message to other single mothers is clear: find ways to succeed rather than waiting for opportunities. “Staying home won’t help. You need to be proactive and seek out ways to thrive. Don’t be a burden on anyone,” she advised.
