Zanzeer Singh, a notable sports journalist in Fiji, passed away at the age of 49 on Tuesday at Lautoka Aspen Hospital after a prolonged illness.
His brother, former Fiji TV journalist Ranbeer Singh, reflected on Zanzeer’s life, stating, “He lived a happy and sociable life, known for hosting gatherings and social events. He had a generous and giving heart.”
Charlie Charters, a former Fiji rugby union official and sports marketing executive, praised Zanzeer, calling him “a tremendous reporter of great humanity, integrity, and good humour.” He noted that he often directed news tips to Zanzeer because of his skill in storytelling and his dedication to getting his stories published.
Writer Jone Kalouniviti described Zanzeer as a standout figure in sports media, highlighting his rapport with people. He acknowledged that while some found Zanzeer’s straightforwardness abrasive, his humor always lightened the mood.
Indra Singh, FBC news director, recalled Zanzeer as a legend among his colleagues, praising his unique approach to reporting and his willingness to assist others. “Zan was always there to help and never said no to anyone. He loved his beer as much as he loved his sports. We have lost a great soul, someone who made our lives fun and joyful,” Singh shared, extending condolences to Zanzeer’s family.
Zanzeer Singh completed his education at Namaka Public School in Nadi alongside former rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula and former rugby player Joeli Lotawa, before attending Swami Vivekananda College.
He began his career with the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation as a stringer in 1997, subsequently joining the Fiji Sun in 1999, and finally the Fiji Times, where he worked for two decades.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Singh, and their children, Nirvana and Siddhartha Iyer. Zanzeer’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, with a viewing at Lautoka’s Girmit Centre before the final rites at Lovu crematorium at 1 pm.
