Lavenia Volaukitoga, 62, has dedicated herself to honoring the memory of her late husband each Remembrance Day for the past 30 years. On this year’s occasion, she was joined by her granddaughter at the National War Memorial Grounds in Veiuto, Suva. Ms. Volaukitoga’s husband lost his life on June 4, 1994, when he was shot down by Hezbollah during a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

Reflecting on her profound loss, Ms. Volaukitoga expressed how faith guided her through her pain and challenges. She recounted the struggles of raising their five children alone, without financial support from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). For a decade, she worked as a market vendor in Bua, striving to provide for her family despite limited resources. Her perseverance led her to a cleaning position at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Suva in 2006, a role she fulfilled until 2016. Now, she focuses on caring for her grandchildren, with her oldest grandchild preparing to take her first Fiji School Leaving Certificate Examination.

Wakesa Raiwa, 19, shared her emotions at the event, admitting she never met her grandfather but cherishing his legacy. She expressed a desire to pursue a future in leadership, aspiring to become President, encouraged by her family’s unwavering support.

Also present was Susana Veretawatini, 59, who has made a commitment to attend this event each year since her husband, Corporal Lui Veretawatini, was killed in action in Sinai in 2008. She fondly remembers the moments they shared and acknowledges the struggles her family has faced since his passing. While she hoped both her children would join the RFMF, only her son enlisted. Despite life’s hardships, Ms. Veretawatini finds peace and remains grateful for her journey.

This article highlights the resilience and dedication of families affected by loss in service to their country. Their stories serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the armed forces and their families. As these individuals honor their loved ones, they also inspire future generations to pursue their dreams, demonstrating that while loss is painful, hope and support from family can lead to a fulfilling life.

Overall, the stories of Lavenia Volaukitoga and Susana Veretawatini embody not just remembrance, but also strength in adversity, and the impact of love that transcends even the most challenging circumstances.
