Families, friends, and colleagues from the media community gathered to honor the late Zanzeer Singh, a former senior sports journalist for The Fiji Times, at the Girmit Multicultural Centre in Lautoka. Yesterday’s emotional tributes celebrated the life of the 49-year-old father of two, highlighting his deep love and sense of purpose.
Ana Niumataiwalu, a former sports journalist at The Fiji Times and a close friend of Singh, remembered him as a larger-than-life figure. “He was a good friend not only in the newsroom,” she reflected, recalling a recent visit when he was unwell. Their final exchange was marked by hope: “I will see you when I get back,” she said.
Waisea Nasokia, West editor for Fiji Sun, expressed admiration for Singh, stating that he was not only a close friend but also a role model. “He was a brilliant reporter who earned a lot of respect during his time in the media. He was straightforward and a great wordsmith. I grew up reading his byline and learned many things from him,” Nasokia shared. He emphasized Singh’s generosity, noting that he had a big heart and was always willing to share with others.
“Overall, he was a great man and a legend in his own right. I thank his family for taking care of him; he was a resilient man,” Nasokia added. Singh dedicated 20 years of his career to The Fiji Times and was cremated at Lovu Cemetery yesterday.
