On the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Aporosa Rokowaqa, the brother of the late CRW soldier Lagani Rokowaqa, delivered a poignant message to senior officers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. He urged them to lead with dignity and integrity, highlighting the important role they play in fostering change within the military institution.
Referencing Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, Mr. Rokowaqa emphasized the importance of fearing God and adhering to His commandments as central to moral leadership. He encouraged the officers to refrain from greed and selfishness, asking them to consider the impact of their actions on the future of Fiji and its generations.
Additionally, Mr. Rokowaqa extended an apology on behalf of his family to the RFMF, acknowledging his brother’s involvement in the 2000 attempted mutiny. He expressed the challenges that Lagani’s family has faced since the incident, sharing the personal impact it has had on them as they navigated their grief and loss.
The event served as a platform for healing, marking a step towards reconciliation for both the Rokowaqa family and the military. Mr. Rokowaqa reflected on the burdens his family has carried for years, noting that this commemoration provided a sense of relief.
The sentiments expressed by Mr. Rokowaqa resonate not only within the military community but also underscore the importance of leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the nation and its people. His call for integrity and forgiveness presents a hopeful outlook for unity and progress within Fiji’s military history, suggesting that meaningful change is possible through compassionate leadership and accountability.
